The Dominican Summer League Cardinals opened the week losing their first game, then winning the next two, and rounding out this period with two losses for the 2-3 record. The Redbirds are 14-21 with a .400 PCT and are 11 games out of first place in the South Division and 27 games away from being eliminated from postseason play. The club is 8-9 at home and 6-12 on the road.
Week In Review:
July 10. 2017: The Cardinals hosted the Rockies in the second game of the series. The Rockies got things going with two runs in the first then tacked on one run in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings for a 5-0 lead. Nelson Prada settled their offense down with three innings of relief only allowing one run. The Redbirds offense reached the scoreboard on RBIs by Ivan Herrera and Carlos Soler. Luis Montano hit a solo home run in the eighth but the Cardinals came up short 5-3, with errors playing a key in the game.
July 11, 2017: The Cardinals opened a new series hosting the Yankees in the first contest. The game was marked by strong pitching from both teams. Enmanuel Solano pitched a career-high seven scoreless innings to open for the Redbirds. The Cardinals scored first on a balk in the third inning and Franklin Soto drove in the second and final run for the club in the seventh. Errors again played a role as the Yankees scored in the eight but still came up short in the low-scoring game.
July 12, 2017: The Cardinals went on the road in the second game of the series against the Yankees. Wilfredo Pereira was strong for the Redbirds, going five and a third and giving up six hits, one run, and striking out a career-high six. The Cardinals offense blew up with two runs in the second, three in the third, and two in the fourth. The Yankees got to the Redbirds bullpen and tacked on a total of nine runs but still lost in the end. William Jimenez singled twice, tripled, walked, and drove in three runs while Joyser Garcia added one single, two doubles, and three RBIs.
July 13, 2017: The Cardinals stayed out on the road in the next series against the Mets One. The Redbirds pitching struggled and the defense didn't help out either as the Mets One scored seven runs with two on errors. The Cardinals offense didn't show up as they only connected for five hits and Francisco Hernandez drove in the only run.
July 14, 2017: The Cardinals returned home and welcomed in the Mets One for the second game of the series. The Redbirds took an early lead with four runs in the first two frames to the Mets two. The Mets One tied it up in the third at four. Errors caught up to the Cardinals and helped hand the win to the Mets One. William Jimenez singled, doubled, and drove in one run and Ivan Herrera added one single, one double, and one RBI. Dionis Zamora struck out one and held one inherited runner on base for the final one and two-thirds scoreless innings.
July 16, 2017: Pablo Gomez and Ivan Herrera were named to the 2017 National League All-Star Game. Gomez entered the game in the sixth at second base. Herrera entered in the seventh behind the plate. Gomez walked in his first at-bat then reached base in the second on a wild pitch strikeout and advanced to second on a balk. Herrera grounded out for the final out of the eight in his sole at-bat. The NL beat the AL 3-2.
Who's Hot:
William Jimenez extended his on-base streak to eight games and connected for three multi-hit games this past week. The 21-year old right-handed hitter went 8-for-19 (.473) with three doubles, one triple, four RBIs (one w/two-outs), three runs, three walks, three strikeouts, and one caught stealing/pickoff. He played all five games in right field. The December 1, 2015 free agent signing leads the team in hits, RBIs, total bases, OBP, SLG, and OPS and is tied for the team lead in doubles, triples, and stolen bases.
Cristhian Longa has an on-base streak of nine games to work on in the next period. The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 7-for-17 (.412) with one double, one RBI, two runs, and two walks. He played four games at first base and assisted in two double plays.
Enmanuel Solano continue his strong showings since entering the rotation. The 18-year old right-handed had his best appearance of his career on July 11th, when he went seven innings and allowed only one hit, no runs, one walk, and struck out four for the win (2-0). He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 13-to-0. Since entering the rotation, The July 2, 2016 free agent signing has logged 17 innings in three games and striking out 13 while walking one.
Wilfredo Pereria hasn't allowed more than two runs in any of his six appearances this season. The 18-year old right-handed had his best start of his career on July 12th, when he tossed five and a third innings and gave up six hits, one earned run, one walk, and struck out a career-high six for the winning decision (1-4). He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 4-to-1. The March 19, 2016 free agent signing leads the starting rotation in ERA.
Dionis Zamora hasn't allowed a run in eight consecutive appearances, spanning 12 innings. The 20-year old right-hander was called from the bullpen on July 10th to face one batter and got him to ground into a double play. On July 11th, he pitched the final inning and struck out two while giving up one hit, no runs, and throwing one wild pitch for the save (5). In his final appearance of this report on July 14th, Zamora gave up two hits, no runs, one walk, hit one batter, and struck one out. He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 3-to-1 and held four inherited runners on base. The June 2, 2017 free agent signing leads the relievers in strikeouts.
Who's Not:
Raffy Ozuna has only connected for three hits in his last 13 played but has a four-game on-base streak. The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 1-for-14 (.071) with one double, three runs, five walks, and eight strikeouts. He played five games at shortstop and assisted in two double plays and committed one throwing error. The July 2, 2015 free agent signing leads the team in walks, strikeouts, and errors.
Alexander Samuel hasn't picked up a hit in four straight games. The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 0-for-12 (.000) with two runs, one walk, four strikeouts, and grounded into one double play. He played one game in left field and two as designated hitter.
Jose Geronimo has give up at least one or more runs in four consecutive appearances. The 19-year old right-hander pitched on July 13th and allowed three hits, three earned runs, one walk, threw one wild pitch, and struck one out over one and two-thirds innings. He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 3-to-1. The May 29, 2015 free agent signing has coughed up nine hits, ten runs (nine earned), five walks, and only struck out three over last four and a third innings since his scoreless streak ended.
Leonardo Taveras has allowed three or more runs in his last three relief appearances. The 18-year old right-hander was called from the bullpen on July 12th and gave up two hits, five earned runs, three walks, threw one wild pitch, and struck one over and was pulled after facing seven batters. He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-0. The September 12, 2016 free agent signing, who was originally scheduled to open at GCL, has coughed up seven hits, 12 earned runs, six walks, and struck four over the last three and a third innings.
Larimel Soriano could only sitting one of five batters he faced this period. The 17-year old right-hander pitched in relief on July 12th and went two-thirds of an inning while allowing two hits, one earned run, one walk, and struck one out. He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 0-to-1 and let all three inherited runners score.
Notes:
Victor Garcia has been out since June 23rd, with an injury, and is expecting to return on Tuesday. Rodard Avelino has been out since July 6th and Allinson Benitez since July 8th. Freddy DeJesus last played on July 10th, Yowelfy Rosario on July 11th, and Joyser Garcia and Erik Pena on July 12th.
Diomedes Del Rio returned to action, after missing almost two weeks, and went 2-for-8 (.250) with one RBI, two stolen bases, one strikeout, and one caught stealing in two games.
